Probably Maison Margiela’s most notable identity code has been hiding the model’s persona by covering their faces on the runway. Their target was that the audience focused just on the clothes, destroying any possible type of ego this way.
The brand created a series of masks for its FW 12 collection that covered the face with a bath of luxury Swarovski crystals. This message creates certain contrast with the sobriety of the house. We can also mention the masks from FW 13, which follow the same format but with less luxurious materials. These masks were aiming to mimic nature’s color palettes.
This element acquired great fame thanks to the collaboration with the rapper Kanye West for his “Yeezus” Tour in 2013. The maison did the costume design for his shows and many of the masks were made exclusively for the artist.
