#TRENDS The newspaper print wave

  • newspaper print trend galliano history

Let´s start with the controversial collection “Hobo” Spring 2000 by Galliano for Dior. This collection was inspired by the newspaper dress trend in the 60s, like the one that the model Twiggy wore in 1967, and the facilities where poor people lived in Paris. This last event caused a great commotion and provoked protests from activist in different houses of the brand.

But Galliano is not the first to take this trend to the haute couture. This imaginary was born in 1935 thanks to the designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who was inspired by the Danish fishermen who used newspapers to make hats to get sheltered from the rain.

One of the moments in which this print will be remembered, is the appeareance in the serie “Sex and the city”, where Carrie, the character played by Sarah Jessica Parker, wore a piece from the Dior´s collection.

There are many brands that have followed this trend in their collections, such as Moschino, Vetements, Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Helmut Lang, Calvin Klein or Galliano for his own brand.
